What is TMS Really Approved For?

As of today, April 24, 2016, rTMS is approved in the US only for the treatment of Major Depressive disorder.

At the NeuroScience and TMS Center we work hard to deliver evidence based care in order to get patients well.  We work hard to help guide you towards recovery without any hyped up sales techniques or false promises.  TMS works for most, but not all patients who suffer from depression.  We do not give up on patients when it doesn't work; we work hard to find a treatment that works for all of our patients by providing multi-disciplinary approaches.

As of today, April 24, 2016, rTMS is approved in the US only for the treatment of Major Depressive disorder.

We know there are other offices that claim therapeutic utility of rTMS across other psychiatric and neurological conditions, but scientists need further research and evidence-based clinical trial data in order to prove these claims.  The potential clinical significance for psychiatric and neurological illness is indeed huge, affecting a large number of patients with debilitating conditions; but at present, it is unethical and unprofessional to promote "that TMS has been approved for a broad range of conditions."   rTMS is indeed being studied in a wide range of other illnesses.  The next most likely indication may come for adolescent depression, although it is too early to tell.

Don't fall for hyped-up ad campaigns with false claims.  Come visit us, we have the integrity and the experience to get you well.

Respectfully,

Michelle Cochran MD
